DB4 GT Zagato — 1960
The DB4 GT Zagato is the product of a meeting between two philosophies of excellence: the British engineering of Aston Martin and the styling genius of the Milanese coachbuilder Zagato. Built on the shortened platform of the DB4 GT, it received an entirely new body penned by Ercole Spada, distinguished by its twin bonnet humps — the famous “double bubble” — designed to free up space for the carburettors and the drivers’ heads. With 314 bhp and a weight below 1,150 kg, its performance was astonishing for 1960.
Built in just 19 examples — several of which were entered in competition with success — the DB4 GT Zagato is regarded by many experts as one of the five most beautiful cars ever made. Its absolute rarity and iconic status make it one of the most expensive cars in the world whenever one comes up for auction: recent sales have exceeded ten million euros. The Aston Martin–Zagato collaboration has since been renewed several times, but none has recaptured the magic of the original.
