The Birth of Bamford & Martin
The founding of Aston Martin dates back to 1913, when Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford set up Bamford & Martin Ltd in London. Based in Kensington, the two partners shared a deep passion for engineering and motorsport, and began by selling and servicing cars before dreaming of building their own.
The founding of Aston Martin: two men and a workshop
Lionel Martin made his name in hill climbs, particularly at Aston Hill near Aston Clinton. It was this place, combined with his surname, that gave the marque its name: Aston Martin. Robert Bamford brought the same mechanical enthusiasm, and their modest workshop soon became a meeting point for motoring devotees. The first complete car, later nicknamed the Coal Scuttle, appeared around 1915.
From this small London workshop would emerge one of Britain's most prestigious grand touring marques. The early years were hard, and the First World War quickly interrupted the fledgling business. Even so, the founding of Aston Martin in 1913 remains the defining act behind the legend that followed.
